Balancing Black and Green
Lately we've featured some pretty high-profile contests, but this one's a little different -- you don't even have to turn on your oven. Green & Black's Organic chocolate is asking readers to submit an original essay (200 words max) on how they balance both the green and black -- the eco-friendly and indulgent -- in their lives. One example the company gave was using DineGreen.com to determine how eco-conscious your favorite restaurants are, so you can feel good about eating out. The winner receives a guest package for two for the June 19-21 Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, Colo., where they'll mingle and dine with the likes of Jacque Pepin, Giada De Laurentiis and Mario Batali -- airfare and accommodations included. To enter, go to www.foodandwine.com/greenandblacks before April 30.Tags: news, student chefs, contests

Recipe Smackdowns Sweeping Cities
Competitive cook-off mania is sweeping New York and other major cities, as recent cooking school grads square off against obsessive home cooks and the occasional kitchen pro. This is no Pillsbury Bake-off. In events such as the "Tofu Takedown," the "Fourth Annual Casserole Party" and the "Pork-off," competitors bring their best dishes and fix them on the street. Recent winners included pork cheeks with truffled grits, country pate and an orange cauliflower roast. At stake? A couple hundred bucks and an afternoon of glory. Coming soon, the Risotto Challenge. Read all about it in the New York Times.
